Manipuri Students’ Federation (MSF) on Thursday urged the state government to start preparations to face the third wave of COVID-19 pandemic in the state.

MSF, in a release, said that the rising number of COVID-19 positive cases and deaths are due to the unpreparedness of the state as the deadly virus caught the state off-guard. The state faced shortages of Oxygen cylinders, COVID dedicated hospitals, doctors and nurses leading to a rising number of cases and deaths in the state apart from the high cost of treatment during the second wave, the student body said.

MSF urged to revamp the healthcare facilities in the state before the third wave hit the state including staff, medical Oxygen plants, number of beds, ventilators, etc. The state should pile medicines, equipment, safety gear etc in stock. Apart from these, the state government should streamline the district infection management and warn the people at the earliest about the new variants, it added.

MSF further urged the state government to train more health workers about how to handle and control the infections. While the non-COVID healthcare facilities should be kept in mind, the student body urged the state government and concerned to consider the suggestions at the earliest.

Meanwhile, Manipur continues to report more than 500 new cases and the daily positivity rate stays above 10 per cent for the last couple of days. The COVID curfew and restrictions will come to an end on June 30. It remains to be seen how the Manipur government will deal with the situations.
