MLA of 45-Chingai Assembly Constituency Khashim Vashum on Saturday launched Van Dhan Vikas Kendra of Chingai Block at the office of Ukhrul Forest Divison, Phungreitang, Ukhrul.
The project is being taken up under the scheme Pradhan Mantri Van Dhan Yojana (PMVDY), a project of Nodal Department – Forest Department Government of Manipur and implemented by Divisional Forest Officer, Ukhrul Forest Division at district level.
Speaking at the programme, Khashim Vashum stated that “the project aims to promote tribal enterprise through value addition, branding and marketing of forest products. We must put our whole effort into making this project a success.” He asserted that this project will greatly benefit the people. “We have abundant natural resources and through forest resources and products we can become successful businessmen,” he added.
He appealed to the participants to learn the techniques and ideas from master trainers and expand their business so that they could enhance their economic living conditions and support their livelihood.
SDO of Chingai L Thangal elaborated on the importance of value addition and asserted that this project aimed to financially empower women through various self help groups. He implored the gathering to improvise the forest products with new ideas in order to earn more along with more production.
Additional Superintendent of Police Ringthing Hongchui stated that “tapping the forest resources which are found abundantly in our area will surely enhance the economic and living condition of our people.” He encouraged the participants to give importance to food processing.
DFO of Ukhrul, Shanngam Shaliwo elaborated on the projects and scheme being taken up through TRIFED, the technical knowhow and support from the Government. He informed that 10 clusters have been selected as the first phase for Chingai Block. Each cluster will get Rs.15 Lakh sanction from the Government to improve the living condition of the tribals.
In appreciation, MLA Khashim Vashum extended financial assistance Rs 10,000 to Master Trainer, Pemmichon Tungshang, proprietor of Zingran Foods. MLA Khashim Vashum also gave away Rs. 2,000 each to all the 14 SHG who were present at the launching programme.
The SHG present were given materials and equipment along with Rs. 5,000 each as an initial payment to start their projects.
