Minor sexual assault case: Student bodies stage protest, demand punishment of culprits

Activists of six student bodies — AMSU, MSF, DESAM, KSA, SUK, and AIMS — on Friday staged a protest at Kwakeithel Thokchom Leikai, Imphal demanding that culprits involved in the recent sexual assault case of a minor at Nagamapal should be chargesheeted at the earliest and punished according to the law.

On June 10, an employee of TPPL, Rupesh Kumar Singh (25) allegedly sexually assaulted an 11-year-old minor inside an SUV (Bolero, white in colour with a sticker “On Duty MSPCL) at Nagamapal, Imphal. The main accused, Rupesh who is a non-Manipuri, along with other accused should be punished at the earliest, said AMSU HQ assistant secretary Nongpoknganbi Paonam, representing the six student bodies.

She also announced that the student bodies will continue to agitate until the culprits are as per the law. Also, the culprits involved in the missing of a minor from Nagamapal on Thursday should also be probed, she added.

Around 30 student activists participated in the protest on Friday. They held placards that read — “Verification of those coming from outside the state should be conducted properly”, “Don’t look down upon Manipuri women”, “Mentality of trading children should be stopped immediately”, “Immoral individuals cannot live in Manipur”, amongst others.
