Manipur police have thwarted an attempt to smuggle suspected medicines used for treating COVID-19 into Myanmar and arrested three individuals allegedly involved in it, officials said on Monday.
According to the police, a combined team of Narcotics Affairs of Border (NAB) Police Station and Singjamei Police Station arrested two individuals from Canchipur area near Heijingang Super Market along NH-2 on Sunday.
The arrested were identified as Mohammad Feroz Khan (30) S/O Md Heffajuddin of Moreh Ward No. 5 Muslim Nagar Makha Leikai, Tengnoupal District, and Imran Khan (22) S/O (L) Abbdullah of Moreh Ward No. 5 Muslim Nagar Mayai Leikai, Tengnoupal District. They were travelling in a van bearing Registration No. AS 01DA-3148, silver in colour.
On searching the van, two carton boxes containing suspected COVID-related medicines were found. It contained 48 packets of DESREM Rx Remdesivir for injection 100 mg/vial, Lyophilized powder for injection for IV Infusion Discard Unused Portion single dose vial Sterile, 100 bottles of SII ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 Corona Virus Vaccine (Recombinant) COVISHIELD 5ml – 10 doses.
The individuals revealed that the medicines were meant for transporting to Myanmar, according to police. They also disclosed that the seized items were handed over to them at Hatta by one Subhamkumar Anand (23) S/O Rabindra Prasad Gupta of Kathiar Pratap Ganj, Bihar, presently staying at BT Road Roopmahal Tank, Imphal.
The police subsequently called up and arrested Subhamkumar Anand on the spot at around 3:40 pm. In this regard a case has been registered at Singjamei Police Station for further investigation.
It may be mentioned that on August 2, Imphal East police arrested a resident of Bihar along with 441 vials of DESREM (Remdesivir for injection, 100 mg/vial) — a broad-spectrum antiviral medication used for COVID-19 treatment.
