When Manipur became the overall champion of the 5th National Games, 1999 held in Imphal, the then chief minister of Manipur W Nipamacha declared February 25 as the Manipur Player’s Day
Manipuri Students’ Federation (MSF) celebrated the Manipur Player’s Day at Chajing Kangjeibung Lampak, Lilong Chajing Awang Leikai. Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) defeated Students’ Union of Kangleipak (SUK), 1-0 in the final of the football tournament of the student bodies of the state.
Speaking to media persons, MSF president Sazad Bhuiyamayum said that when Manipur became the overall champion of the 5th National Games, 1999 held in Imphal, the then chief minister of Manipur W Nipamacha declared February 25 as the Manipur Player’s Day. And since 2018 MSF has also been celebrating the day.
Sazad also said that apart from learning from books, the students of the state need to stay physically fit. Hence the day is celebrated to instill a sense of love for sports amongst the students, he added.
A football tournament participated by members of six major student bodies — AMSU, AIMS, DESAM, KSA, MSF, and SUK, kicked off from February 21. The final of the match was played on Thursday, between DESAM and SUK. DESAM won the match, 1-0.
Manipur University School of Education dean professor Takhellambam Inaobi, All Manipur Football Association (AMFA) president Moirangthem Ratan, AMUCO and NRC advisor Wairakpam Gonel, and Mingle Club president Engenthaba Meetei also attended the function.
