Governor of Sikkim Lakshman Prasad Acharya has been appointed as the Governor of Assam, with additional charge as the Governor of Manipur, according to a press communique from the Press Information Bureau (PIB). Om Prakash Mathur has been appointed as the new Governor of Sikkim.
The communique also stated that the President of India has accepted the resignation of Banwarilal Purohit as Governor of Punjab and Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh. Gulab Chand Kataria, the Governor of Assam, has been appointed as the new Governor of Punjab and the Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh.
CP Radhakrishnan, presently the Governor of Jharkhand with the additional charge of Telangana, has been appointed as the Governor of Maharashtra. Santosh Kumar Gangwar and Jishnu Dev Varma have been appointed as the Governors of Jharkhand and Telangana, respectively.
Additionally, Haribhau Kisanrao Bagde and Ramen Deka have been appointed as the Governors of Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, respectively. CH Vijayashankar has been appointed as the Governor of Meghalaya.
The appointments will take effect from the dates they assume charge of their respective offices, stated the press communique.
Who is Lakshman Prasad Acharya?
Born on the 3rd October, 1954 in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, Lakshman Prasad Acharya is known for his contributions to education and public service. He was the 17th Governor of Sikkim. He started his career in his own hometown as a teacher in 1973 at Bhartiya Shishu Mandir in Ramnagar, Varanasi.
On June 22, 1977, He initiated the “Child Education in the Village” campaign with the sole aim of establishing schools in the remotest villages. He helped establish institutions of learning, such as Sishu Shiksha Niketan and Shri Kalidas Shiksha Sansthan Junior High School, in 33 far-flung locales like Baburi and Sakaldiha. His efforts extended to even more distant areas in Madhya Pradesh.
In 1990, Lakshman Prasad Acharya entered politics by becoming the divisional president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the Ramnagar area of Varanasi. In 1995, he assumed the role of General Secretary for the combined district of Varanasi, which included Varanasi and Chandauli. In 1996, Acharya’s political journey led him to become the District President of the BJP for the Varanasi district. Chairman of Uttar Pradesh Fisheries Development Corporation (UPFDC). In 2015, Acharya was elected as a Member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council (MLC) after contesting the election from the Legislative Assembly constituency. He commenced his term on January 31, 2015. He was re-elected for a second term as a Member of the UP Legislative Council in 2021. He continued to represent the interests of the people in this capacity until his appointment as the Governor of Sikkim.
