A baby boy weighing 4 kg was delivered on Saturday at District Hospital, Ukhrul. The delivery of the baby is significant because it is for the first time that a baby was delivered through caesarean section at the District Hospital.
The hospital has not been able to take up many life-saving procedures because of the lack of infrastructure.
The surgery team comprises gynaecologist Dr Soreingam Kasar, anaesthetist Dr Md Nusharat, staff nurses Wingreichon Shimray, Theiyaphy Marchang, Mareo Hungyo and Shangshing and OT technician Singmila Sira.
The 28 year old mother from Sorathen Village of Kamjong District had come to the District Hospital three days ago for delivery. She suffered premature rupture of membrane during her stay at the hospital, and the fetus’ umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck, endangering the lives of both the mother and the baby, and the baby had to be delivered through caesarean section.
The mother and the baby are reported to be recovering well in the hospital’s post-operative ward.
The medical superintendent of Ukhrul District Hospital said, “Despite many shortcomings and limitations of infrastructure and staff in our hospital, we will carry out more such procedures in the coming days by fixing specific days for such procedures in our hospital.”
