One month after cyclone Remal wreaked havoc in Imphal, Manipur is likely to receive heavy rainfall at isolated places in the next five days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday issued an ‘orange alert’ (be prepared) for Senapati District and Ukhrul District on July 1 and July 2 respectively with the possibility of very heavy rainfall in these districts and yellow alert (be updated) in the next four days till July 4r for the whole State.
According to the IMD, the state may face water-logging/flooding in many parts of low-lying areas. It warned of strong possibility of landslides/mud slide/land slip. Heavy rainfall may damage the standing crops and vegetables in the maturity stage.
Meanwhile, following the IMD’s Orange alert (Thunderstorm with lightning and very heavy rainfall very likely at isolated places) for Senapati District on 1 July 2024, the district administration issued an advisory for the general public to take precautionary measures and announced district helpline number 917628992200 for any emergency.
People were advised to stay informed and updated with the latest weather forecasts and warnings issued by local, state and national authorities. They were directed to reinforce old doors and windows and secure loose objects in the houses. The general public were also advised to stay indoors and not to come out of their houses unless under unavoidable emergencies. Agriculture, fishing and other outdoor activities may be postponed till the weather condition improves, it added.
They were asked to stay away from flood-prone areas, landslide-prone areas, rivers and streams and immediately move towards safer places and Keep emergency contacts handy.
Thousands of people were affected by floods after Cyclone Remal made landfall with heavy rainfall in in several parts of Manipur during May-end. The overflowing Imphal River had inundated several areas, with water entering hundreds of houses, affecting several thousand people who have subsequently taken shelter at nearby community halls.
