TFM Report

Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee interim president, MLA Loken on Wednesday maintained that the resignation of Govindas Konthoujam from the Manipur Legislative Assembly and primary membership of Congress party won’t affect the party.

The Congress president of Manipur also maintained that Govindas left the party on personal grounds. His departure from the party won’t affect the prospect of the party in the upcoming 2022 state general election, he added.

Loken also informed that ever since he was appointed as the interim president of MPCC on July 24, he tried to contact Govindas. But he has switched off his mobile phone. There was supposed to be some communication on Wednesday night, but surprisingly his letter tendering his resignation from the primary membership of Congress party arrived at the party office, he added.

Underscoring the ‘uncertainty’ associated with the politicians of the state in regard to their affiliation to a political party, Loken recalled that the present chief minister N Biren Singh was once a minister in the then Congress government. Many who used to be against the Congress are now a member of the party, he added.

It may be mentioned that after Govindas tendered his resignation from the post of MPP president on July 17, there were speculations and political uncertainty in the state.

The move was also viewed in consonance with the July 26 verdict Supreme Court that many were anticipating. The case relating to the disqualification of 12 MLAs has been deffered to August 26 after the apex court heard the pleas.

With the resignation of Govindas, the 11st Manipur Legislative Assembly now has seven vacant seats — Andro AC, Bishnupur AC, Lamlai AC, Naoriya Pakhanglakpa AC, Kumbi AC, Tamenglong AC, and Henglep AC.

With 24 MLAs, BJP remains the party with the maximum number MLAs, followed by Congress with 16 MLAs, NPP and NPF with four MLAs each, three independent MLAs, and one each for LJP and AITC.

Meanwhile, political observers are anticipating more political ‘movements’ as the state general election approaches, slated to be held in the early part of 2022.
