Naga Women Union urged the Election Commission of India and Chief Electoral Officer, CEO, Manipur, to review the polling date for the nine hill assembly constituencies in Manipur which is scheduled to vote on February 27, 2022, which falls on Sunday.
The union asserted that fixing a poll date on Sunday is against the religious sentiment of the minority Christian community in general and the communities of the nine constituencies in particular.
“The Naga Women Union would like to register our sentiments of hurts to the Election Commission of India and Chief Electoral Officer, CEO, Manipur State, for setting the date of polling on Sunday the 27th February 2022, for the 9 (nine ) Hill Assembly Constituencies of Manipur through its notification vide its Press Note No. ECI/PN//2022 dated 8th January, 2022,” stated a release by the union.
The Senapati based union said that India as a secular state whereby social pluralism is fortified by the unique constitution, should uphold the principles of the Indian Constitution in letter and in spirit.
“We reiterate that respecting the sentiments of minority religions will preserve the sanctity of the Indian Constitution and the rearrangement of polling dates will serve the interest of every citizen in Manipur.”
The people residing in the nine hill assembly constituencies are predominantly Christians. They are: 46- Saikul (ST), 51- saitu (ST), 55- Tipaimukh (ST), 56- Thanton (ST), 57- 50 Kangpokpi Henglep (ST), 58- Churachandpur (ST), 59-5aikot (ST) and 60- Singhat (ST).
