Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has demanded action against the Admission Committee of Dhanamanjuri College of Teacher Education (DMCTE), stating that it has violated the rules and regulations of NCTE time and again.

DESAM, in a release, stated that selecting candidates for admission to DMCTE, which is the only teacher education College of Manipur government, solely on the basis of marks without conducting an entrance test suggests that there is no regard for rule of law.

“If the excuse is going to COVID-19, then what about the entrance tests conducted by Manipur University and DM University,” DESAM asked.

The release also mentioned that DESAM had apprised the irregularities and mismanagement in teacher education in the state to the Central Vigilance Commission.

Slamming the Higher Education Department for its inaction in streamlining the teacher education institutions, DESAM quipped, “Don’t you feel ashamed in letting DESAM doing your job?”

Meanwhile, DESAM has condemned the November 20 order by the commissioner (Hr and Tech Education), government of Manipur, which limited the term of the principals of government and aided colleges to a period of three years.

The post of “in-charge principal” is supposed to be a temporary arrangement before a permanent principal is selected. The latest order by the government suggested that it wants to keep these posts as temporary for some time, DESAM said in a release.

DESAM also said that such arrangements will create more problems. The teachers and students have been demanding regular principals since long back, it added.

Key posts in the education sector like director, commissioner, secretary, etc. should be held by the same person for at least five years. Frequent changes by the government have hampered the development in the field of education, DESAM contended.
