Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has alleged nepotism in treatment of COVID patients in Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) and Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS).

DESAM, in a release on Saturday, contended that people without any connections with the corridors of power are in a situation akin to waiting to die. The student body also alleged that the treatment is being conducted by PG students and not professors in these hospitals.

Arguing that these factors are contributing to the ever increasing COVID deaths, the student body drew the attention of the state government on the issue at the earliest.

The students’ body stated that common people cannot easily get Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds. It is not surprising that people are dying on a daily basis. DESAM will start to keep an eye on the way COVID patients are being treated, it added.

The student body also raised the Oxygen situation in the state. Even though the state government has set up several Oxygen plants, many continue to struggle to obtain Oxygen in government run hospitals, it added.

DESAM also questioned the ethics of the assistant and associate professors, whom they said are not directly involved in the treatment of COVID patients. The treatment is being mainly handled by PG students, it added.

The student body also urged the state government to pay the medical officers, nurses and MTS staff recruited on contract basis to fight the pandemic. The statement by the health director that everyone is being paid is an insult, DESAM asserted.
