Imagi Meira, a women’s activist group, has publicly criticised the state government for its handling of the ongoing conflict, calling for the Chief Minister to either lead effectively or resign from his position.
“Be a Chief Minister of Manipur, or step down,” said Imagi Meira’s convenor, Th. Sujata, during a press briefing at the Manipur Press Club on Tuesday (November 12). Sujata expressed strong disappointment in the government’s response to recent incidents, including abductions in Jiribam, indicating that a decisive leadership approach is crucial.
Sujata called on the 19 MLAs who had earlier fled to Delhi to clarify their positions, urging those still in Manipur to demonstrate their commitment to unity. “Now is not the time for factions or waiting to claim credit. Either take a stand or stay out,” she added.
Sujata criticised political figures appearing on television debates, suggesting they revealed their lack of commitment to Manipur’s welfare. “Blame-shifting between parties won’t save Manipur,” she stated.
Expressing frustration over the government’s approach to escalating violence, Sujata stressed the urgency of rescuing six people, including three children, allegedly abducted by Kuki militants. Imagi Meira has been advocating for decisive action by both the state and central governments, but Sujata expressed dismay over the continued lack of response, which has left many in Manipur disheartened.
“Does the ruling party consider the people of Manipur mere pawns in this struggle? Why should innocent people die because of demands for a separate administration?” she asked. Sujata advised those pushing for separate administration to pursue their claims through appropriate platforms, not at the expense of the public.
She condemned the government for focusing on budget meetings rather than prioritising peace, saying, “Budget discussions can wait. First, save Manipur.”
Sujata further pointed out the lack of unity among Manipur’s 48 MLAs, stating, “If they cannot unite, how can we expect unity among the people?”
She also urged people to support one another, particularly the children in relief camps. “Remember, the children in these camps are also our children. It’s not only your own who are suffering,” she said.
Sujata questioned why the Chief Minister’s strong words in the media were not matched by action, asking him to refrain from sowing division among the people. “Let your actions align with your words,” she urged.
“We have repeatedly appealed to the government, yet the issue remains unaddressed. It is disheartening to see that despite our efforts, no substantial action has been taken,” Sujata said. She also challenged the MLAs to be transparent with the Centre, urging them to bring the reality of Manipur’s situation before national leaders.
Imagi Meira expressed frustration over repeated appeals for effective measures to ensure Manipur’s safety. “Even a dog learns with time. Why haven’t the MLAs and the Chief Minister?” Sujata asked, calling on them to decide on meaningful actions within seven days or seek assistance from the Centre.
Sujata ended her address with a message to Prime Minister Modi, expressing confidence in his abilities. “Prime Minister Modi has demonstrated his skill in mediating international issues. It is time to direct that expertise towards saving Manipur,” she said.
