In collaboration with AHPI (Association of Healthcare Providers of India) and CAHO (Consortium of Accredited Healthcare Organizations), Shija Hospitals & Research Institute (SHRI), Imphal, observed “World Patient Safety Day” on September 17, 2022, at Shija Auditorium.
Dr. Lokeshwar Khumukcham, Medical Superintendent of Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences, Manipur, graced the event as Chief Guest; Naorem Tangbi Devi, President of Trained Nurses Association of India (TNAI), Manipur, as Guest of Honor; and Dr.
Palin Khundongbam, President of the Association of Health Care Providers of India (AHPI), Manipur, as President, said a press note issued by Premjit Lourembam, Manager – Business Development, Shija Hospitals and Research Institute (P) Ltd.
This event aims to support the World Health Organization’s “Medication without Harm” campaign. The keynote address of the program was given by Dr. James Elangbam, Secretary, AHPI Manipur. He called on all stakeholders to prioritize and take early action in areas where unsafe medication practices cause significant harm to patients. Speaking at the event, Dr. Lokeshwar underscored the crucial role played by nursing education as nurses monitor patient progress 24 hours a day, seven days a week. As a primary strategy for ensuring medication safety, he recommended monitoring, recording, and reporting drug reactions to the prescribing physician at the earliest opportunity. Naorem Tangbi emphasized the significant burden of medication-related harm caused by medication errors and unsafe practices, and advocated immediate action to improve medication safety.
In a state like Manipur, where medical tourism is highly lucrative, Dr. Palin Khundongbam stressed the importance of medication without harm.
In the second half of the program, Dr. Chakshu, Consultant Physician, SHRI, presented on “Medication without Harm” and Kongbrailatpam Sushma, Nurse Educator, SHRI, presented on “Nurse role in Medication Management” as well as a virtual observation of World Patient Safety Day by CAHO in the presence of Unit Head, WHO Patient Safety Flagship.
The event was attended by over 100 healthcare providers from different healthcare organizations across Manipur. Among the organisations that attended the event were Noor Hospital, Babina Diagnostics, Mother’s Care Children Hospital & Research Centre, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal Heart Institute, Rangini Clinic, Jivan Hospital, Escent Diagnostics, Samaritan Nursing Home, JR Clinic, ACME Fertility & Healthcare Center, Medilane, and others.
Association of Healthcare Providers (India) represents the majority of healthcare providers in India. It works as “not for profit” organization and advocates with the government, regulatory bodies and other stake holders on issues, which have bearing on enabling its members organizations to deliver appropriate healthcare services to community at large. CAHO is also a “not for profit” society to provide a common platform for all NABH and NABL accredited Healthcare Organizations.
